Struggling to build online courses that actually connect with learners? Wondering why some content sticks and some falls flat? Hi, I’m Bianca Raby—and today I’m pulling back the curtain on one of the most underrated tools in effective course design: learner personas. If you’re serious about quality Learning Design, keep reading. Because once you understand learner personas, you’ll never do your course design the same way again.

What are learner personas—and why do they matter?

A learner persona is a semi-fictional profile based on real data, crafted to represent the learners you're designing for. Think of it as an empathy map meeting your ideal course participant. And yes, it’s essential for creating learner-centred content that resonates.

In course design, generalising may seem counterintuitive—but building two to three strong learner personas per course helps clarify goals, challenges, and preferences across your audience.

Building a learner persona: meet Claire

Let’s walk through an example using four key pillars of Learning Design:

1. Demographics

Claire is 35, a marketing manager with a bachelor’s degree and a few leadership courses under her belt.

2. Goals

Claire wants to upskill in AI and digital tools to stay current in her role—especially with her team starting to use more tech platforms.

3. Challenges

She works a condensed four-day week and doesn’t do much hands-on work anymore, but needs to guide her team effectively. She hasn’t used many AI tools herself and feels a little behind.

4. Learning preferences

Claire prefers practical content: screencasts, real-world scenarios, and step-by-step tutorials. She’s not keen on long readings but values opportunities to apply new skills.

And voilà! Now your course design has a guiding voice.

Why learner personas transform Learning Design

Once you’ve created personas like Claire, your Learning Design conversations shift completely.

At Oppida, we regularly hear the team ask, “Would Claire find this useful?” or “Is this how Claire learns best?” When you’re referring to your learner personas by name, you know your course design is rooted in real learner needs.

Beyond engagement, learner personas help align your entire course design team—from content developers to marketers. Everyone starts speaking the same language.

Your course design goals

If you want to stop guessing and start designing with purpose, build learner personas first. Your Learning Design process will be faster, more focused, and more effective.

Have you used learner personas before? Have they helped your marketing team or improved your course design process?

Until next time, stay awesome and always start with the learner.
