Education and Learning Design in 2022: reflections from the field
Another year gone! As we wrap up 2022, it's the perfect moment to hit pause, take a breath, and reflect on what this wild ride has meant for education—especially from a Learning Design perspective.
Hi, I'm Bianca, educator, Learning Designer, and your friendly neighbourhood EdTech nerd. Each year, I carve out a bit of time to reflect professionally (and OK, personally too—but that's a different story). So, let's zoom in on three key insights 2022 has gifted us in the world of education.
Learning Design lessons for a changing education landscape
1. Microcredentials and microlearning are here to stay... maybe.
The education sector officially went full steam ahead with microcredentials and microlearning this year. These bite-sized, skills-focused options promise flexible pathways for learners navigating an ever-changing workforce. And yes, they're hot right now—maybe too hot?
We've seen this before (remember the MOOC hype?). Many sounded revolutionary, but few delivered lasting outcomes. If Learning Design is done well, microcredentials could buck that trend and genuinely support lifelong learning. The key will be resisting the urge to chase trends without substance.
2. Learning Design is being recognised as a strategic investment.
Finally! This year, I had more meaningful conversations with education leaders about the true cost—and long-term value—of Learning Design. Gone are the days of scrambling to build a course in six weeks and calling it done.
Institutions are starting to understand that high-quality Learning Design takes time, iteration, and expertise. I watched one client evolve from novice to near-expert in online course development across a single project. Their transformation reminded me just how critical and impactful our work in education really is.
And it's not just higher education seeing the light. Kinder to year 12 and vocational education providers are also starting to prioritise design-led approaches to teaching and learning. That shift in mindset? Huge.
3. Scary tech isn't so scary after all.
Let's talk AR, VR, and AI. These tech acronyms have been hovering over education like storm clouds for years. But 2022 showed us something new—they're not actually that scary.
Sure, VR might eventually have its moment in the classroom (yes, I own a headset; no, I haven't used it much). But guess what? Most learners—and educators—still crave real-world connection. As we continue to explore emerging tools, we'll need Learning Design that's human-centered, thoughtful, and grounded in purpose.
Because at its heart, education is still about people.
As we head into 2023, I'm feeling hopeful. The education sector is evolving. Learning Design is earning its place at the strategy table. And while the shiny tech is tempting, we're learning to ask the right questions: Does this truly serve the learner?
So here's to thoughtful experimentation, human connection, and another year of impactful education.
Wishing you a joyful, restful break.
And until next time, stay awesome.
