Bitcoin in education? Why teachers need to pay attention—now
On April 20, 2024, Bitcoin went through another halving event—and if you, like many other teachers, are still scratching your head about what that even means, don't worry. You're not too late. But you do need to start paying attention. Hi, I'm Bianca Raby—digital education strategist, ex-teacher, and tech translator for humans. Today, we're talking about Bitcoin, and why it's time for teachers to get curious about how to discuss Bitcoin in education, not cautious.
Also, quick note, if you prefer to watch I've made a video on this same topic:
Why teachers can't ignore Bitcoin in education anymore
Here's the deal: Bitcoin isn't just for crypto bros in hoodies anymore. It's a real, global economic shift. And yes, teachers—especially those in digital education—need to understand the basics.
Whether you teach Year 3 or postgrad economics, your students are growing up in a world where Bitcoin is as common as credit cards. Some are already investing. Some are being scammed. Either way, it's part of their reality—and part of our responsibility as teachers to teach Bitcoin in education.
What is Bitcoin halving?
Every four years, the Bitcoin network cuts the reward miners get for validating transactions in half. That's the halving.
Think of it like this: less Bitcoin is being created, which affects supply—and eventually, price. This is core economic education material: scarcity, inflation, supply vs. demand. And it's way more engaging than another slide about gold reserves.
Five reasons teachers should use Bitcoin in education
Let's get practical. Why should teachers fold Bitcoin into their classroom education?
Economic education
Teach real-world concepts like scarcity, inflation, and monetary policy using a tech-driven example students care about.
Financial literacy
Bitcoin helps learners understand digital assets, risk, investing, and long-term value—all essential parts of modern education.
Technology education
Blockchain, distributed ledgers, cryptographic protocols—sound intimidating? They don't have to be. These are 21st-century digital skills.
Current events integration
The halving event made global headlines. Discussing Bitcoin in education helps students see their schooling as relevant to the world around them.
Critical thinking & media literacy
Not all crypto news is good news. Scams are rampant. Teachers can help students dissect media messages and question hype with real critical analysis.
One bite at a time
I get it—Bitcoin in education is a big topic, and teaching time is tight. But you don't need to become a blockchain guru overnight. Start with one concept at a time. Bring it into a maths lesson. A business class. A digital literacy unit. Us teachers are a creative bunch.
The bottom line? Bitcoin is here to stay. And it offers teachers an incredible entry point to modernise and energise education.
Until next time, stay awesome.
